27 2nd - 5th instar caterpillars are snacking on 6 marsh milkweed plants with only 1 3rd instar on 2 butterfly milkweed plants. All milkweed was newly planted this season; purchased from charity-supporting spring plant sales supplied by Missouri Wildflowers Nursery and Monarch Watch. I've used 1- and 5-gallon paint strainer bags to cover the tips of the milkweed plants, protecting 11 of them from predators. I've purchased a square tomato cage and roll of polyester window replacement screen to make a screened enclosure that protects more of them. Take heart, we all can make a difference with a small suburban planting!!
