Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/01/2015

Number: 6

Ruby-throated hummers continue to frequent the nectar feeders. 3 adult males, 2 adult females and immature female (or male. Might have more than this but can't watch feeders in front yard at same time where a couple other hummers hang out. Immature hummer feeds almost exclusively on black & blue salvias and pink Wendy's Wish salvias. Too much competition from the adults. One adult male has been around for a few weeks. 2 adult males stayed about 10 days and left. 2 new adult males have shown up. Also had 3 immature males for a quite some time. They have left and been replaced by the females. For whatever reason the adult hummers seem to prefer high perch feeders and bottle feeder with bee guards over wider bottle feeders. Might be it is harder for bees to access the nectar or it gives hummers better range of view. Interesting. As expected the departure for evening roosting continues to be earlier and earlier. Last night it was around 8:00 p.m. Noticed that cloudiness seems to cause hummers to go roost a few minutes earlier than with clear sky. Still have pair of male and female baltimore orioles feeding on nectar. Seems like more hummers migrating through this year and definitely more orioles.
