Ruby throats coming to feeders today were either female or juveniles. I have been out of town for two weeks so I missed my local males' departures. I had as many as 6 hummers at once at 5 feeders just before I left. Adult males were still present August 21st.
I arrived home this morning to find a female hummer buzzing me as I got out of my car, apparently telling me to hurry up and refill my feeders. It was my first order of business. I assume my hungry hummer was a local bird used to feeding at my feeders. (I was wearing all black so it wasn't a case of attracting the bird by color.) I had arranged for someone to keep at least one feeder up and filled but all were empty when I got home. I have all 5 feeders up and filled again now. Today 3 at one time was my peak sighting...hoping for more in the next few days.
