Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 09/03/2015

Number: 1

While visiting family in Indiana:
Full size caterpillar was actively moving on two swamp milkweed plants in a suburban garden in late afternoon/evening. Observed before and after dinner (6:30pm and 7:30pm) I did not see it eat anything. As it walked it rotated both antennae constantly.
The plants had one fresh flower and about 8 pods. One of the pods was partially bitten in the middle.
Also observed were at least 6 black and red bugs congregating on the base of a pod. These come out in the fall here and I have not identified them. The did not interact with the larvae.
