Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/10/2015

Number: 4

Three juveniles and one female ruby throats at feeders in aerial combat--bobbing...weaving...circling...diving. At least one of the juveniles is a male who is showing the first feathers of his gorget glowing ruby red. They are fighting over my four feeders (despite the fact that they could each have one to themselves.)

It has been very dry here the last few weeks (dry and hot enough that I have begun to water my trees because they had begun dropping leaves and/or the leaf edges were turning brown.) Possibly as a result I have not seen as many birds feeding on my althea bush (rose of sharon) which had been a favorite in past years.
Weather -- big change from yesterday and recent days -- cloudy, 78 F, very light breezes, rain in forecast (please!!!) at nearly 11am. (Recently the weather has been very close to 90 F at this time of day and sunny.)

Keep your feeders UP--I had a few stragglers in early OCTOBER last year who were dependent on my feeders to fuel them for the next leg of the journey. Thank you all for caring about our wonderful acrobats! Go Hummers!
