I visited Horicon Marsh this morning at 7:00. At 7:30 I saw my first monarch. The wind was out of the north at 11 mph. That monarch fly straight into that north wind, struggling all the way until it was out of sight. After 5 minutes, I saw my second monarch. This one fly north west, again struggling somewhat. By 8:15, I counted 16 Monarchs. Of these only 5 flew with the wind. I find this behavior very
strange. Can someone explain this to me? Then I moved to the auto tour road and saw many more Monarchs nectaring on goldenrod and yellow wild flowers.
When I left, I had counted more than 50 Monarchs. It was a great morning.
