I've looked for Monarch caterpillars for years, and have never noticed what I saw this August. Attached to every Milkweed Plant that I saw in this location near Chambersburg, PA were what I identified as Common Garden Spiders. Their webs were attached on one side to a Milkweed Plant and you could see that each of the Milkweed Plants either currently had a Monarch Caterpillar on it, or there was evidence of a caterpillar having been there, with several of the leaves well eaten. I "saved" several of the caterpillars by destroying the spiders and their webs. One spider in particular looked as though it was positioned to attack at any moment. Interesting but unfortunate.
