Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/17/2015

Number: 1

June 4-5-6/15 I had three Monarchs show up on my 1/8 acre of showy milkweed, one each successive day (I reported them to Journey North). One disappeared after a week, the other two stayed until 08/05/15, feeding on milkweed nectar. I watched them closely (I used to be a serious butterfly collector) but I never saw them lay one egg. I checked the field almost daily. No larvae. The butterflies were very flighty, but I got close enough to know I had at least one female (no scent gland visible on the hind wing). I should have had new ones on the wing by the end of July, but there were none.

It is now 09/17/15, and I have not seen any Monarchs passing through my farm headed south. Am looking forward to seeing how many I will get returning this coming spring/summer.
