For the last couple of weeks we have had only two birds -- originally identified by me as two females. However, I have been watching the gorget feathers on the smaller one of them darken. Today when the sunlight hit this one changing bird, I saw the red flash of a small cluster of ruby feathers at its throat. All these weeks these were not two females, but a maturing male and a female. This bird has also become the aggressor toward the female remaining in his company, shooing her away. Not knowing when one scores a bird as a mature male, I am placing this report here.
