Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/19/2015

Number: 5

The Ruby Throats have been coming in hot and heavy all day--it's 6:15 and here in VA they have gone through over 20 oz in one day (not a lot for the gulf coast states I know, but a lot for my VA house this time of year.) It's been nearly a month since I had this much traffic/consumption in one day. I am only counting the birds I see at one time in the number reported. I had 4 immatures and 1 female on the feeders at once. I believe many are migrants because they are circling around the feeders before selecting one or more. My locals have just been coming straight into their favorite feeder (I currently have 4 up.) Some of the birds appear tired and hungry--they have been sitting on the feeders for much longer than the locals did all summer. One immature stayed for a half an hour--looked like s/he caught a short nap in between digesting the meals. Go HUMMERS!

While there is a bit of aerial acrobatics, generally the RTs have been more interested in feeding and leaving today. Still seeing some hitting flowers but not as much today as the past couple of days. I have a few red buckeye blooms (confused trees) that the hummers are stopping for. The hummers love the red buckeye blooms in the spring migration...I get swarms on the trees at times.

Weather--front coming in and light winds blowing south--sunny, low of 59 F, high of 86 F, fog early burning off by 9 am, very light breezes building to about 10 mph in evening--forecast for 20 mph winds tomorrow and much cooler -- mid 70's forecast.
