Sitting beside Cape Fear River-saw about 15 monarchs flying south along river.
We did see some fritillaries around the area where we were vacationing (Wrightsville Beach, NC). It was hard to tell if they were migrating as we saw them mostly inland on the “street side” of our beach house. The Monarchs we definitely saw on the beach side. Even my daughter who is a novice butterfly person, could tell they were monarchs. We saw them especially heavy on two days 9/21 & 22 and they were moving in pairs and singles about every 10 to 15 minutes for the 3-4 hours we were on the beach. Didn’t have anything to photograph and they were moving too fast.
We were staying in Wrightsville Beach at a beach house on the island and were on the beach several days where we saw the Monarchs in flight. We also visit Wilmington, NC on the mainland about 15 miles inland where we saw some monarchs along the riverwalk area of the Cape Fear River. Then we drove down to Southport, NC one day about 30 miles south and again saw more Monarchs while we were eating lunch at a restaurant also along the Cape Fear River where it empties into the ocean. It was a very exciting vacation for us!
