I saw two monarch butterflies flitting on the roadside around 4PM. I was driving home from Point Pelee National Park in Ontario, Canada, and just 4 miles from home after a 6-7 hour drive.
A friend and I had traveled to this great wildlife strip of land, in search of the monarchs roosting in the trees near the point - waiting for the correct conditions to start their mass flight across lake Erie. Unfortunately, we missed the big take off by just 2 days!
We did see several late comers along route 3 a few miles from the park and we saw one in the park.
The naturalist said there were many more butterflies this year than the previous three years.
Although I was disappointed to miss seeing the monarchs roosting, I was thrilled to be at this wonderful gathering place and to see where they take shelter for a time before continuing their long incredible journey.
