Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/21/2015

Number: 20

Approximately sixty 3rd grade students from a local elementary school were tasked with the job of catching, tagging and releasing monarchs at Ponquogue Beach between 12 and 2pm on 9/21/15. The general weather conditions they observed were cool, sunny/partly cloudy, and windy. They measured the following: average air temperature-70F, cloud cover-estimated 50%, average wind speed-8 to 12 mph, gusting to 15mph, wind direction-E, NE blowing W, SW.

A small number of butterflies were observed (20), however none were caught or tagged, due to swift winds and/or high flying.

Anecdotally, evidence of the migration was shared with students by surfers who reported seeing 100's over the ocean the day prior.
