I viewed 4 different Monarchs at 5:45 PM, in a mowed field along a busy limited-access highway. The weather was calm, with thick cloud cover, 70 degrees F. (We're expecting heavy rains tonight.) Two came to rest near the ground, on low mounds of still-growing cut grasses; the other two were very active, flying about other parts of the field but then landing, closer to a thick hedgerow. Exactly a week ago I visited the same area when it was sunny: many other butterflies were flitting about but no Monarchs.
