Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 09/23/2015

Number: 4

At two MonarchWatch waystations where the landowners have cared for Monarchs and Common Milkweed hostplant all year, the are three final instar caterpillars feeding today as the sun sets.

Tending the milkweed involved cutting it in August to stimulate new shoots.

Only one Kilometer away, in a residential area under construction, common milkweed is feeding another. All are in excess of 40 mm.

It's not surfing when you are sliding down the backside of a wave, so the adults flying today are mostly newly eclosed from the local area. Seven adult fliers — all fresh observed nectaring on Aster, Solidago and Red clover.
