Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers
Sightings report image

Date: 09/25/2015

Number: 5

I have 5 female ruby throated hummers in my yard today. Judging by their feeder preferences and skills, as well as perching sites and flight patterns, I think that only female is a regular who's spent the season in my yard, and the others are migrating through. I've had many hummers the past two weeks who are new to my yard, and have spent multiple days here figuring out the technique for each feeder before moving on. I've been surprised that they've spent multiple days here before continuing their migration, but I do have 4-5 feeders up each day, and one bird can't quite guard all 5 feeders at once, so there are lots of opportunities for feeding. There's also been a lot of rain the past two weeks, so once here, the migrating visitors have stayed hunkered down near the feeders for days.
