Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/27/2015

Number: 2

Two immature ruby throats at my feeders today simultaneously...I am still seeing hummingbirds daily...most are now immature RT. I still have 4 feeders up but will be taking down 2 when I clean the feeders and replace nectar tomorrow.

This week I had two days of winds blowing from the NE (toward the SW) and nectar consumption dropped precipitously the second day. Nectar consumption was more than halved. My flowers are petering out also, in part due to drought. Most of the Ruby Throats prefer to nectar at the remaining flowers before checking out the feeders. I am watering but my plants are definitely stressed.

Last year here in northern VA I had a couple of Ruby Throat stragglers toward the end of October so I will be keeping my feeders out, cleaned and filled until then...longer still, should I see any hummingbirds. Fly little hummingbirds, Fly!

Very sadly, I am not seeing as many Monarch butterflies this year as last. To date, I am only at 5 total. This is, so far, even lower than 2013. I am bummed!
