I saw 1 adult female nectaring on New England Asters. I got a good look at her with binoculars, from 12:43 PM - 1:05 PM. She appeared to be in prime condition, despite the last 3 cold nights,(this morning our thermometer read 40 Farenheit).
I have had only 1 other sighting of an adult Monarch at my place, in this whole past summer, even though we have a 10 acre field full of milkweed and forage plants, and another 8 acres of overgrown field with more forage plants. It has been like this for at least the past 3 summers. Before that, we saw lots of Monarch caterpillars and adults regularly, and have always kept Milkweed and forage plants for them. Lat summer I saw 3 adults at a time. The summer before that, 2.
What can we do to help?
Will this one have a chance still, to join the migration? A single butterfly can't have much chance to make it through cold nights without joining a cluster.
We live in desperate times.
