While on a mission to collect dozens of very late larvae from a narrow leaved milkweed stand along the Spokane River, I noticed this newly hatched female struggling in the wind along the riverbank. She was too fresh and soft to fly well, and was frightened from the protected spot she had emerged from, by a dog and its owner on a stroll. I rescued her about 5 ft. from the river and took her home with the caterpillars I collected. She was much stronger when she was released the next morning with a tag affixed to her wing. Temps are unseasonably warm here now, so she has a better chance than most years of making it to her winter home.
