Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 08/05/2015

Number: 1

1 adult male ruby-throat hummer. Arrived July 21 on a north wind and established part of our back yard as his territory. He would stay in a nearby Bradford pear and guard our feeders, huge trumpet vine and hibiscus bushes, both of which were in full glory, chasing all the other hummers who came by to drink/nectar. Frequently two or three would drink/eat while he was chasing off another; sometimes there were fights involving 3-4 hummers at once in early August. Especially feisty were the young males, identifiable by the small red spots on their breasts. He must have tired of it all; on August 5 he left sometime late morning and started his migration south - winds were calm. The next day (Aug 6) we had strong northeast winds.
