Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/02/2015

Number: 1

By chance I happen to glance out our kitchen window that overlooks the patio and spotted one lone chubby female traveler drinking from one of the four still hanging feeders surrounding the patio. How long she was there before I noticed her, I'm not sure, I watched her drink for another ten seconds and then off she flew in a southward direction. She looked very plump, so much so I didn't think at first glance it was a hummingbird. However, she definitely was!

She definitely was a late season traveler, as our regular summer hummer residents were last sighted late in the evening on September 24th. This makes the 5th year in a row our last seen late traveler makes an appearance 8-9 days after our regulars have left, so it is wise to maintain the feeders for an additional 2 weeks afterwards.
She was spotted at 8:50am EST, 48 degrees outdoors, with wind gusts between 12 to 15 mph. the sky's are clear with scattered clouds, humidity 77%. Expected high temperatures today of only 61 degrees and the over night lows were close to 40 degrees.

Unless I see another late traveler .. catch you all next season!
