As a rule, we only see Ruby throated hummingbirds. Yesterday I saw one hummer feeding on the flowers from a hanging basket of Lantana. I still have 2 feeders out, but I did not see the one go to either feeder. It had been a couple of days since I had seen a hummer, and I don't think this one was a Ruby throated. It looked like maybe a Rufous? I feel the ones I have been seeing the past couple of weeks are traveling through, as they are a bit more skittish than the regulars I had this summer. Is it possible that a Rufous could be passing through this part of upper East Tennessee? I sure hate to see the hummer season end. They will be missed.
