Just when I think, okay the cold and the rain maybe signaled an end to our sighting of southward bound hummers, surprise! Looks like my 2015 hummingbird season continues to be drawn out at least one more day, with the sighting of two more adult female hummer travelers. The first female was sighted at our feeder in front of the bow window of our dining area at 4:45pm. Temperature at the time was 63 degrees, up from the mid 50's the day before. The wind held steady most of the day at around 3-7 mph with the humidity at about 90% due to yesterday's rain. This female wasn't quite as plump as most of the other female traveling visitors we've had so far at seasons end, however, she was thirsty and remained at the feeder for about three minutes, drinking quite a bit, eventually she departed straight southward. Our second female was sighted at 7:13pm at the same feeder. This girl was much more plump and she drank for 30 seconds, zipped over to a nearby tree limb for a couple minutes and then returned to the feeder and drank for a another minute or so. She flew off in a southwestward direction, possibly toward the hedgerow of heavy cover that our summer regulars seem to enjoy hanging around. Maybe resting for the night. The temperatures are suppose to hold close to 52 degrees tonight and rise up to a high of 74 degrees tomorrow. Our return to work tomorrow may find us missing any more possible south bound migrating visitors and bring an official end to our 2015 season. However, it's been exhilarating and an added bonus, playing host to so many season's end migrating hummers than we've ever had before during the last twenty years. Feeders will stay hanging and fresh a couple more weeks yet.
