I am very sad. I haven't seen any monarchs recently...to date I have sighted only 5 this year which is the worst year I have had in the 16+ years that I have lived here. Previously 2013 was the worst with only 10 sighted for the year. Last year I had about 30 so I was encouraged they were coming back. My blooming plants are all coming to the end of their blooming period. I hope if any more butterflies are coming they come soon.

I have over 20 milkweed plants now...4 common, 4 butterfly weed and the remainder are either white or pink swamp milkweeds. All but the butterfly weed are first year plants. I hope to provide seed pods to Monarch Watch next year for VA.

Virginia is in the process of adding milkweed plants to its rest-stops...the one in Dale City had 20,000 plants added this week! I am also hoping the federal highway median program in the midwest will help bring the monarchs back.
