Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 10/05/2015

Number: 6

four are stage 5 instars , but two are stage 3 and one is stage 4.

21 degrees C but blue sky and lots of IR!

This generation is going to migrate or perish. The larger caterpillars are over 50 mm long.(Recall the 2 Sept breeders flying in Leamington Ontario while the migration began.)
Good harvest weather for combines means that it is also a good time to use the choppers along roadsides, which imperils these late larvae. Moving them to way-stations but leaving them exposed to low light levels, short daylight and parasites may be the best way to show respect for migratory Monarchs.
Milkweed that has been stressed in August sends new tender shoots from the underground stems which is still tender for caterpillar consumption.
