Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/06/2015

Number: 2

My husband said we had a lot of activity around 9:30 AM. He could not tell if we had 2 or 3 Hummers but he did say that the Hummer that could not figure out how to use our feeder(last night) was back & that she still had not figured out how to use it. We do not know if she is a transit from the Desert region in the West part of Texas but she fed primarily on flowers of Sage using her beak in the up & down motion. She did not like feeding from our "flat-top" flowers. She still tried all day & evening to come at our feeder from the bottom & never found the port. I even tried to help by wrapping a silk red flower around the port thinking she may try the flower and accidently find the port but it did not work. Our smaller female that is very territorial kept chasing her off. We did not see them after 6:40 pm. I am not sure if we still have our regular large female because it was difficult to tell with all the fast pace chasing that we did not have until our visitor came to feed last evening. Will try to see what happens tomorrow. I did find a feeder On-Line that I think she would be able to figure out how to use but by the time I get it she may be long past but could add it to our collection for next year. It is a test tube like feeder & others do have a cork with red tip pointing down so I believe that would mimic the flowers she is use to feeding on.
