Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/04/2015

Number: 1

I am sorry to report that I saw a hummingbird hanging upside down by one foot from the perch on the feeder. I thought it was dead, and I went inside to get a Tupperware container in which to collect it. When I got back, I found that it had fallen to the ground. It landed in some grass, and it was barely alive. I brought it inside my kitchen, where it was warmer. I then offered it some nectar from a dropper. It did drink some, and it seemed to perk up a little bit. I brought it outside to be near the feeder, should it attempt to fly. I made nectar available to it by setting it on a Tupperware lid with a trough, which I filled with nectar. It's tongue was going into the trough, and it was taking the nectar. I don't know how long it was hanging upside down from the perch, and it died about two hours later. I don't know what I did wrong, or if I did do something wrong. It would be very helpful if you could post an article on how to help disabled hummingbirds, should this happen again. I have been hanging hummingbird feeders for 15 years and have never seen anything like this before. This has been a very sad and upsetting experience for us, since we enjoy watching the hummingbirds so much, and we don't want any harm to come to them.
