Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 10/08/2015

Number: 88

After endless days of rain the last week of September and first few days of October during our peak Monarch Migration, added with the threat of Hurricane Joaquin, the sun has finally returned to Western North Carolina. Much to our delight, we counted 88 Monarchs and tagged 17 from 1pm to 3pm at the Pounding Mill Overlook (elevation 4700') on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The temp was 68F, mostly sunny with intermittent clouds and a slight breeze. It was wonderful to watch the Monarchs feeding on the asters and golden rods as they fluttered by.
