Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/09/2015

Number: 4

Finally saw 4 monarchs nectaring in the front yard this afternoon on our butterfly bush. They were there nearly 5 hours as I checked off and on during the afternoon. The temperature was the warmest and the sun was the brightest we've had in quite awhile! The wind was strong and they hung on for dear life as they seemed determined to fuel up! I'm assuming the bad weather from the past week had prevented much movement in this area. I still have lots of lantana, a few zinnias and a few purple coneflowers for feeding if more head this way. Have not seen any reports from nearby Assateague Island yet this season, and we usually get the migrating group after they leave Cape May...but again, the weather has not been what was needed to allow them to move south. Looking for more hopefully in the next weeks. I also released 1 captive-reared female today and have 2 more chrysalises waiting.
