100s or 1000s have been flying along the ocean just above the ground along the dunes of the beach. They seem to have a little more black than monarch butterfly pictures I see. Peak seemed to be Saturday morning but some started again Sunday evening. Also tonight, dragonflys seem to be flying same direction over our roof top deck 2 rows in from the beach .
I talked to SC DNR today. A very nice guy thinks we were seeing the Gulf Fritillary. This butterfly commonly lives in the southeast, looks similar to a monarch, and migrates to South Florida.
