Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/10/2015

Number: 15

It appeared that the monarch migration was later in southern Ontario this year, and after a week or so of cooler, cloudy weather, we are having spectacular but windy sunny weather east of Toronto. Afternoon highs approaching the high 60's F F, but it is particularly warm in habitats sheltered from wind.

At Presqu'ile Provincial Park yesterday (Oct. 10/15)., I spotted 15+ monarchs, primarily in the day use area along the north shore of Lake Ontario. This area was last mowed a month ago, so there are many dandelions and short flowering clover on which the monarchs were feeding. Still lots of blue New England aster, in decline, and some goldenrod. Many sulphur butterflies. West of Port Hope, Rod Parrott counted 25+ monarchs in a clover field. Rod noted that the migrating monarchs were flying higher up and dropping down into the clover field.
