I saw 2 monarchs on butterfly bush between 1 & 2 pm on sunny day in low 70s. As I watched from the porch panic ensued as I saw an all too familiar enemy - a large preying mantis moving at the top of the bush. I shooed the monarchs away because in past years I've seen mantis eat the monarchs. I felt I must intervene.
About 3pm I returned to the bush where the mantis was eating the remains of a bee. sigh...
