To my surprise, I watched a monarch fly into our zinnia garden. It was 11:30 a.m., sunny and low 70s with a light breeze. There are 8 stalks of common milkweed nearby and pink & purple cosmos are blooming alongside the zinnias - I've never seen monarchs by the cosmos. The monarch landed on many zinnias and stayed at least 5 minutes - long enough for us to lightly sprinkle the garden! I wasn't able to see its wings open long enough to tell its sex but it seemed to be brightly colored. I tag monarchs that I rear and this monarch did not have a tag.
