Noticed a few in the evenings before but tonight (10/12) a whole lot came in to roost.
I was so thrilled that our lil plot of land was considered by these beautiful butterflies. Started noticing only a few flying by about Oct 9.
Oct 12 at 7:30 about 300 came in and started to roost on the SW side of a Pecan tree and a White Ash tree. They were shielded from wind by more trees. Wind had been a strong 15-20 mph all day from the north. Stopped around 6:00pm. Overnight temps got to about 51F.
Update October 13
Our 12 acres are organic with pasture but an overwhelming amount of wild flowers this year. We have a garden center with a trial garden of native plants where I noticed some butterflies this morning (10/13). Texas sage, Russian sage, salvia gregeii, artemisia etc. Also a stand of pinyon pine trees where they seem to like it too.
Update October 16
The Monarchs left yesterday afternoon (10/15/15). It was a warm 85+ weather.
This morning a cold front hit us with wind out of the north gusting to 15 mph. Now it's only 61F
