Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/24/2015

Number: 5

Even though the skies are gray and the day is cool, the hummingbirds were out early, buzzing though the garden, hawking for fungus gnats and other small seasonal flies.

As the days shortened and the weather cooled, the ginkgo leaves turned color and are now drifting down onto withering ferns and hostas, covering them with a mottled cloth of gold. The hummingbirds hover low over this green and golden carpet carpet, dislodge small leaves with blasts from their wings and snatch any small insects dislodged by the oscillating feathers.
