Number: 1

I have summer and winter birds in my garden. The latter are [mostly] not long distance travelers but spent the breeding season in the salt marsh at the foot of our hill or in forests of the Cascade Mountains to the east. Many of the new arrivals have never been in the garden before because they were born and raised in the woods only this year. As unseasoned neophytes they could easily fall prey to feral cats and cruising hawks--but they have Mother Nature on their side: the leaves falling as they arrive provide perfect camouflage for foraging in their newly discovered winter home. This Fox Sparrow searches for dropped sunflower seeds under a front yard feeder.
