While sitting on the beach in Charleston, SC, there was a steady stream of butterflies all following one after another about every 10 to 20 seconds apart (about 80 in all). They were flying south. One larger, slower monarch fell into the sand by some wild flowers. I noticed that it was very tattered, faded, and had to stop to feed before it could fly again. It obviously had been on a long flight.
Since we are from Ohio, we are not as familiar with the gulf fritillaries. So, many of them may have been just that. Because they were in flight, I did not get photos of them.
