Observed one mint condition Monarch butterfly in open grassy, wet meadow near an athletic field. Westerly winds were very strong, and the Monarch was mostly resting, occasionally flying a short distance in close proximity to the ground, using grassy hummocks as shelter from the wind.
I observed another Monarch butterfly yesterday in my backyard in Amherst, New York which has already been reported.
Additionally, a professional colleague recently reported a "surprising number" of migratory Monarchs in his yard in Cattaraugus County, New York on October 12, 2015. These observations suggest a pulse of Monarch migratory activity may have occurred during mid October in Western New York.
