I was shocked to see a lone monarch flying southwest, flying at car height along the roadside searching for nectar. No nectar available. As I waited at an intersection, the monarch flew up to my red car, fluttered right in front of my windshield, then moved across the street still flying about 5 feet off the ground. Poor thing, there is almost nothing left in the way of nectar sources, maybe just a few scattered plants along riversides in town. Does not bode well for this poor monarch. Beautiful day, 72F, calm, sighting was at 12:15pm. Wish I could have caught it and given it some gatorade!
