After weeks of nonstop grey and drizzle in the aftermath of Hurricane Patricia, dense cloud cover finally lifted the day before yesterday. For the first few days the only monarchs we saw were our own homegrown Mexican monarchs, eclosing in our yard. Then suddenly today when we were eating breakfast outside at 10 am we spotted dozens of monarchs dancing about overhead. Macheros is in a valley, right at the entrance to the Cerro Pelon Butterfly Sanctuary; we'll get the report from our forest rangers later today about whether or not they've started forming roosts on the mountain above us yet. Last year we didn't see monarchs in substantial numbers until Nov 22. This year they missed our Day of the Dead celebrations, but it's still much earlier than the past two seasons.
