Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 11/06/2015

Number: 40

I drove from my home just east of Navarre, Florida west to Pensacola, Florida (approx. 35 mi.) today. I saw, as I have every day this week, plenty of monarchs along the way and as well as at my destination in a Pensacola neighborhood with trees and flowers. This week the weather has been rather sunny and in the high seventies to low eighties. Hardly a breeze. It is difficult to count the numbers, but I probably saw around forty to fifty.

I am very good at distinguishing between the two types of butterflies (monarchs and gulf fritillary). At this point in time, since we still have so many fritillaries still flying through here and we now are probably in our peak time and have been for about two weeks with the monarchs, when they are at a distance, I usually estimate about half and half. This is actually about what it turns out to be when I observe them up close. I imagine it won’t be that way in about another week.

I have had quite a garden in front of my house for the past four or five years. Each year, I try to add a new specie of flower. We always have monarchs, fritillaries, sulphurs, buckeyes, skippers a few others. Here's a photo my husband took with a monarch and fritillary at the hummer feeder outside our window near the garden.
