Signs of Fall
Sightings report image

Date: 11/10/2015

Number: 1

Our song sparrows are not true migrants. From late spring into fall they live and nest in the shrubs lining the creek winding through our neighborhood and in the salt marsh at the foot of the hill (because that's where most of the bugs are on which they feed). They occasionally nest in the garden--whenever city crews "improve" the riparian habitat. [In another week or so, chum salmon will be spawning in the creek, leaving their spent bodies behind, food for coyotes, great blue herons, and raccoons.]
