Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 01/18/2016

Number: 1

An adult monarch was observed emerging from its pupal case on Jan 18. This is one of 6 pupae that still exist in our backyard. Temps at night in the 40s and 60s to low 70s during the day. Minutes after this photo was taken in the late afternoon, the butterfly left and we have not located it again. I don't know what happens to this generation that gets "stalled" in South Texas in January before reaching overwintering sites in Mexico. Do they continue migrating south or attempt to overwinter here? There are no milkweed leaves left on our plants at this time of the year.
