I have seen several hundred (~400) Monarchs in a tree grove on Mare Island in Vallejo. There are a lot of different variety of trees on the island due to the military history.
The group of trees I have found them in consists of a bunch of eucalyptus, but oddly enough they aren't landing on any of the eucalyptus. I think they mostly land on the cedars. There are a couple of big gardens on Mare Island, which I would assume is the source of nectar.
Residents on the island tell me that the butterflies usually stick around for a couple of weeks and then move on. I didn't see any huge concentrations or clumping, though I am told it happens. Beautiful sight to see, though concentration was somewhat spread out.
