Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/01/2016

Number: 9

Back in early December, several monarchs laid quite a few eggs on the milkweed in my garden and pots. Throughout December and early January, they all hatched (about twenty of them). I kept having to purchase more milkweed from our one and only nursery. From early December until last week I had about twenty chrysalises. Some of the caterpillars ate and grew rapidly and others took several weeks to reach the chrysalis stage. One chrysalis turned black and died. Several took about three weeks before the adults emerged. About eight of the emerged butterflies didn't fully open up their wings. I placed them in my garden and let nature take its course. The rest of them have all flown off and hopefully have found food and water. No one was interested in any of the flowers in my garden before flying off. I believe about two thirds of them were males.
