Our two sixth grade classes planted twenty bulbs following the Journey North protocol.
Students also applied their understanding of fair tests and experimental design to plan and carry out ten other experiments to test whether other factors might influence when bulbs emerge and bloom:
Does removing the tunic affect when tulips emerge?
Does planting a different kind of tulip affect when tulips emerge? (We tried two other kinds of tulips)
Does planting in a courtyard affect when tulips emerge?
Does the amount of sun affect when tulips emerge? (We planted under a bush.)
Does the amount of nutrients affect when tulips emerge? (We added extra bone meal to some, and blood meal to others.)
Does the distance apart affect when tulips emerge? (We planted some 2 inches apart and others 6 inches apart.)
Does the position of the bulb affect when tulips emerge? (We planted some sideways and some upside down.)
Does cutting off some scales affect when tulips emerge? (We sliced off a piece from the side of some bulbs.)
Does planting in a pot affect when tulips emerge?
Does planting depth affect when tulips emerge? (We planted some 12 inches deep and others 4 inches deep.)
