I had 9 caterpillars in January 2016. The picture is the only chrysalis I found. Two of my caterpillars turned to butterflies, but had crumpled wings and did not survive. I saw 3 monarchs afterwards.

It's now march and I had again 9 caterpillar, I have 4 chrysalis that are in safe places where the butterfly can emerge and have room to spread their wings.
