Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/06/2016

Number: 2

Two male robins were on the Common area between townhouses in my neighborhood, visible from my patio door. Over about 10-15 minutes I watched as they kept an eye on each other while searching the lawn for food. One bird seemed very aggressive if the other got near the base of a particular tree and would walk quickly towards it, causing the other bird to retreat. There would be a truce for a moment or two while they fed on the lawn. Then more "walk fast towards and retreat." They walked out of sight at one point, One returned to perch on the tree and was actively engaged by the other in a full blown face to face fight with wings and feet, tumbling to the ground. They disengaged, then spent the rest of the time I was watching slowly circling the tree, feeding, and trying their best to keep the tree between themselves or one chase the other away. I'm guessing the tree is a potential nest spot or song perch. Did not hear song because I was inside. Side note: a male cardinal happened to fly onto the lawn and was aggressively walked towards, then the robin backed off, realizing his mistake! The cardinal raised his crest and prepared to defend itself if needed, saw no need, settled back down to eat something in the grass.
