Asclepias asperula, the only species at our location that emerges before Monarchs arrive. Largest of 4 plants at different locations on our property. Typical horizontal growth. This one has been up a few days, but likely less than a week. Emerged from perennial roots. Already has formed an immature flower, which is not unusual, though many plants wait until larger. The purple cast is also not unusual. Fades as plant grows larger.
