Reports have been coming to me about monarchs being seen from Tallahassee and St. Marks to Fort Walton Beach. At least six have been reported to me as seen as far inland as Tallahassee, a number of others along the coast from Wakulla county to Gulf county, and many in the Fort Walton Beach area, which is much further west along the Gulf Coast.
Del Stone, who last year wrote a well-researched article about monarchs for the Northwest Florida Daily News, emailed me a couple of days ago saying, "I have seen hundreds of monarch butterflies locally (Fort Walton Beach) in December and January, more than I have ever seen." He reemphasized this in a second email saying that he has, "seen a steady stream since November, probably saw more in December than I saw in September and October. But I'm still seeing them--just this afternoon I saw several."
Needless to say, it has been a mild winter down here--to this date, at least. And wouldn't you know, last year I ended my three-year monarch overwintering study, which recorded sightings and locations of monarchs along three Gulf Coast counties.
